The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called for an adjustment of the academic calendar amidst the ongoing CETAG strike. According to NUGS President, Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel, scrapping the entire calendar and starting anew would be counterproductive.
“We are proposing for an adjustment, not totally scrapping everything off and starting again…If we scrap everything off and we start all over again, it will turn the whole academic calendar down,” he stated in an interview on Morning Starr.
Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel emphasized the need for a flexible approach, saying “there should be an adjustment, a door that will be open to accommodate most of the things that have been lost over the past three to four weeks.”
He also highlighted the plight of level 400 and 300 students who have rented apartments for their out program, stressing that failure to adjust the calendar would greatly affect these students who have incurred expenses without support.
“If we don’t make an adjustment, it’s going to affect all these groups of people, it’s going to affect those who are on the verge of writing their exams and even going to distort the whole itinerary of students who find themselves in these places,” he warned.
NUGS is urging authorities to consider the proposed adjustment to mitigate the impact of the CETAG strike on students.
