Eric Delanyo Alifo Esq., a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, has stated that the NDC is not surprised by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo, describing their reaction as predictable.
The suspension, which took place on April 22, 2025, followed the establishment of a prima facie case based on three separate petitions.
This decision was made in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, with the required consultation from the Council of State.
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) issued a statement emphasizing the need to adhere to constitutional processes throughout the ongoing proceedings.
In response to the suspension, the NPP, alongside four other political parties, has announced a planned demonstration for May 5.
They have strongly condemned the suspension, which they consider an attack on the judiciary’s independence.
During an interview on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Mr. Alifo remarked that the NPP’s reaction was entirely expected, given the favorable rulings they had received under Chief Justice Torkonoo.
Mr. Alifo emphasized that the suspension was carried out in accordance with the law and reiterated the importance of following constitutional due process to safeguard Ghana’s democracy.
He stated, “We know NPP would fight, fight so hard because under this Chief Justice, they had so much favor, so much grace. They were wining every case until their own people were complaining. So why wouldn’t they fight. People know that they are fighting only because is being hunted, that’s how they see it. I think that once they cannot force the president on any part of the process or whatever he’s doing, until today, they have not said that the President has done anything wrong.”
