The Executive Director of the Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), Michael Donyina Mensah, has criticised the committee that recommended the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, arguing that it failed to address the real concerns of Ghanaians.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei on Friday, September 5, he said, “The Chief Justice, through her actions or inactions, may have created the impression that she is biased.”
Mensah explained that public confidence in the judiciary had waned under her leadership, largely due to perceptions of bias in the handling of certain cases.
“Many Ghanaians may have had an issue with the way she handled the justice system,” he added.
He further noted, “I am a bit disappointed with the work the committee did. The justice system dwindled under her.”
While the report cited mismanagement and irregularities, Mensah stressed it did not capture the depth of public frustration with the judiciary in recent years.
Justice Torkornoo was removed from office on September 1, 2025, after a constitutional committee set up by President John Mahama found her guilty of stated misbehaviour.
Her dismissal has since sparked debate about public trust in the courts and the independence of the judiciary.
