A five-member committee established by President John Dramani Mahama to hear petitions for the removal of the suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, is set to commence its hearings on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was formed in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution after a prima facie case was established. The formation of the committee followed consultations with the Council of State, as required by law.

According to a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the committee will meet three times each week to deliberate on the petitions and will submit its recommendations to the President upon completing its work.
The hearings are part of a constitutional process to ensure accountability and transparency within the judiciary. It’s is the the first of its kind in the Fourth Republic.
