The Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association of Ghana has slammed Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), for what it calls “disrespectful and unbecoming” remarks against Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Dr. Tenkorang-Twum recently criticised the Minister’s handling of violent attacks at Ridge Hospital, suggesting he lacked understanding of hospital operations because of his background as a farmer.
The comments sparked public backlash, with many describing them as needless and unprofessional.
In a statement signed by its President, Abena Serwaa Akoto, and Secretary, Francis Asaba, the Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association said while it supports legitimate concerns of nurses and midwives, leaders must avoid “personal attacks and derogatory language” that undermine the profession’s image.
“We, the Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association of Ghana, wish to place on record our strong condemnation of the recent utterances made by the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.”
Leadership, especially at such a level, demands maturity, diplomacy, and the ability to express dissent without resorting to personal attacks or derogatory remarks. Unfortunately, the approach taken by the GRNMA General Secretary fell short of these standards.”
The Association urged nursing leaders nationwide to maintain decorum in public discourse and expressed hope that Dr. Tenkorang-Twum will reflect and adopt a more professional approach in future engagements.
“We therefore strongly denounce those comments and urge him, and by extension all leaders within our noble profession, to uphold the highest standards of decorum and professional conduct in public discourse,” the statement read, adding that such remarks risk dragging nursing into disrepute.
