A devastating fire at Asuakwaa Top, a suburb of Sunyani in the Bono Region, has claimed the lives of a local chief and his wife in what residents describe as a heart-wrenching tragedy.
The victims, identified as 65-year-old Nana Siribour Ampofo II, the Wrempimhene of Wenchi, and his 48-year-old wife, Grace Yaa Ampofo, were found dead after their three-bedroom home was engulfed in flames late Sunday night.
Eyewitnesses say the fire started around 11:00 p.m. following a heavy downpour. Despite desperate attempts to escape, the couple reportedly became trapped inside as the blaze spread rapidly through the building. Their charred remains were later discovered in the kitchen area.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service in the Bono Region confirmed they received an emergency call but arrived to find the house already consumed by flames. Firefighters managed to contain the inferno, but it was too late to save the couple.
According to preliminary findings by the Fire Service, the victims appeared to have made efforts to flee but were overcome by the smoke and heat. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
The landlord, who lives abroad, said he was deeply shocked by the incident, adding that the couple had moved into the property only a few months ago, in May 2025.

Residents of the area expressed sorrow over the tragedy, noting that a third occupant — a young woman — managed to escape unharmed and raised the alarm, but all rescue efforts proved futile.
