Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has called for faster adoption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across Ghana, describing it as a critical transition fuel in the country’s journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
Speaking at the 2026 World LPG Day and LPG Awareness Campaign, Dr. Jinapor said expanding access to LPG remains essential to improving public health, protecting the environment, and reducing dependence on traditional cooking fuels.
According to the Minister, Ghana has made significant progress in promoting LPG usage, with national penetration currently estimated at about 43 percent. However, he noted that millions of households still rely on firewood and charcoal for cooking, underscoring the need for renewed efforts to expand clean cooking solutions nationwide.
“Access to clean, affordable and reliable energy remains a key priority of government,” Dr. Jinapor stated.
He explained that increased LPG adoption helps reduce harmful indoor air pollution, improves health outcomes particularly for women and children, and supports environmental conservation by reducing pressure on Ghana’s forests.
“Natural gas and LPG remain critical transition fuels that provide cleaner alternatives while supporting economic growth, energy security and industrial development,” he said.
The Minister highlighted government’s establishment of the Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund as a major step toward mobilizing resources for renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency programmes, and investments in clean energy technologies.
He assured stakeholders that government would continue supporting the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), LPG Marketing Companies, and industry players to expand LPG infrastructure, improve safety standards, and increase public awareness on the safe use of LPG.
Dr. Jinapor stressed that stronger collaboration between government, regulators, industry players, development partners, and consumers would be necessary to achieve Ghana’s clean energy ambitions.
“The success of our clean energy agenda will depend on strong partnerships that accelerate LPG adoption, improve access to modern energy services, create jobs, attract investment and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s energy transition objectives,” he noted.
He commended the National Petroleum Authority, LPG Marketing Companies, and other stakeholders for their continued efforts to promote safe and responsible LPG use across the country.
