The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Mahama to dismiss his Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, if he fails to resign over the controversy surrounding DStv pricing.
The demand comes after MultiChoice, operators of DStv, publicly contradicted the Minister’s claims of securing a 30% price reduction, clarifying instead that what he described as a “breakthrough” was only part of their regular promotional offers.
The company later issued an apology after the confusion sparked public backlash.
However, addressing journalists in Parliament, Deputy Ranking Member of the Communications Committee, Charles Asuako Owiredu, accused the Minister of wasting state resources and misleading Ghanaians.
He argued that the Minister not only failed to achieve his stated goal of reducing subscription prices but also showed poor temperament and a lack of capacity for such a sensitive portfolio.
“This episode reflects the Minister’s ineptitude and penchant for deception,” Mr. Owiredu said, adding that his conduct undermined regulators like the National Communications Authority (NCA) and breached the President’s code of conduct.
The Minority is demanding that Mr. George render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians, account for fines imposed on DStv, and step down.
According to them, should he refuse, they insist the President must sack him to restore credibility and protect the communications sector.
“We deem him unfit to continue as the Minister for the Strategic Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, and therefore call on him to resign or for the President to fire him.”
