The former Minister of Finance, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has urged the government to kick start a comprehensive policy reform on agriculture in order to improve the sector.

Dr. Duffuor stated that there has been limited progress in the agricultural sector due to the low productivity in the sector.

According to him, for the sector to thrive the nation must start matching jobs with skills in a way to attract intentional market adding that policymakers must strive to inculcate capacity building in the sector.

“I went into the field of economics because I know that what may seem like dry and attractive numbers are actually tools to create real change for people in need. I went into politics to put those tools into action to create policies that would level the playing field.

“Cassava is one of Ghana’s most important staple foods. It accounts for 12.23m metric tons to 22.5m metric tons in 2019 making us the second-largest producer in Africa. There’s a need to deepen reforms in legal, regulatory and administrative systems that affect the quality and efficiency of the Agriculture sector. We need comprehensive policy reform to improve the sector in job creation,” the former Governor of Ghana’s Central Bank said during a dubbed ‘The Ghanaian Dream; Transforming the economy through job creation and opportunities for all” on Monday, November 29, 2021, at the Tang Palace.

He added “only limited progress has been made in the agricultural sectors due to the low productivity in that sector. Thousands of jobs can be created by encouraging and supporting cassava entrepreneurship,” he said
