A new Board of Governors of W.B.M Zion Senior High School in Akyem Old Tafo in Abuakwa North Municipality in the Eastern region has been inaugurated.

This development has occurred amidst infrastructural challenges bedeviling the school.

The members of the new Board are; Mrs Margret Nsiah Ofori (Regional Director of Education), Bartholomew Ofori (Director General’s of GES), Ms. Abena Gyamera (Abuakwa North Municipal Director of Education), Prof. Emmanuel Adinyira(AME Church Representative), and Mr.Richard Anarfi (Headmaster).

Others are Mr.Joseph Obeng (PTA representative), Mrs. Ruth Woode, Mr. Roya Boateng Antwi (Abuakwa North Assembly Representative), Mr.Donald Kwame Asiedu, and Ms.Kyerewa Philomina (Old Students Representatives),

The rest are Rev.Francis Omanpeh Siaw (Teaching staff representative), Mrs.Dorcas Boateng Antwi (Non-Teaching staff representative), and Ms. Getrude Ampomaa Mensah (Traditional Council Representative).

The Chairman of the Board is however yet to be appointed.

Inaugurating the new board, the Eastern Regional Director of Education Margaret Nsiah- Asamoah charged the board to ensure judicious use of resources allocated to the school to create and promote congenial academic environment to enhance effective teaching and learning.

She urged the board members to pay regular visits to the school to be better informed with the situation on the ground to inform their decisions and solutions to address them.

She however stated that despite the powers of the board ,certain decisions such as dismissals of students must be sanctioned by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service

“The recommendation of the Board must be referred to the Director-General through the Municipal and Regional Director of Education through the Municipal and Regional Director of Education for final approval, while the affected student(s) in the interim,is /are placed on indefinite suspension “.

W.B.M Senior High School, formerly known as AMEZSS since its establishment in 1979 had operated in a rented facility until 2016 when the school relocated to a new site albeit uncompleted facilities.

A girls dormitory block project has been abandoned while inadequate classrooms have forced school authorities to convert part of the boy’s dormitory into classrooms. Inadequate teachers bungalow is also affecting supervision.

Security on campus is compromised due to the absence of a fence wall.

Joseph Obeng, PTA chairman of the school says some female students were nearly raped by some rapists.

“yes sometime ago we had a report that when the children wash their items and hang some thieves maneuver their way out to take some of the items away from the school. More importantly , some boys came in the night to try to rape some of the girls so the walling of the school is our priority now but the school is faced with many infrastructural challenges”He told Starr News.

Prof Emmanuel Adinyira, Associate Professor at Department of Construction Technology and Management at KNUST, and a board member of the W.B.M Zion SHS who spoke on behalf the board said, the high academic feat chocked by the old board will be sustained and improved through holistic approach which encompasses discipline, quality teaching and learning and infrastructural improvement.

“As a board, our expectation is to move the school forward. You have heard from the outcome Chairman’s speech they have achieved a lot . Our board wants to move the school beyond where it is now academically the school is doing well but we want them to do better. Infrastructure wise, you can see there are issues with infrastructure. Our mandate is to help management to move the school to the next level and that is what we intend to do”

Chief of Akyem Tafo Osabarima Adusei Peasah II charged the new board to be proactive and efficient to help lift the image of the school with quality education delivery.
