The Minority in Parliament has visited cocoa farmers in the Eastern Region to assess the impact of the recent reduction in producer prices.
The government cut the price of cocoa from over 3,500 cedis per bag to just above 2,500 cedis, citing falling international prices and alleged mismanagement of the sector by the Nana Addo administration.
The delegation, led by Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri Frank Annoh-Dompreh, along with Ranking Member for the Committee on Economy and Development Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Ranking Member for the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Dr. Opoku Yaw Isaac, assured farmers that their concerns would be vigorously pursued in Parliament.
Farmers, however, expressed frustration that the recently announced release of over 800 million cedis to BDCs for cocoa payments has not reached them on the ground.
They appealed to MPs to press the government to address delayed payments and other sector grievances.
A farmer stated, “We have yet to receive the funds promised despite the government’s announcement. We urge MPs to ensure our voices are heard.”
