Seven people, including five men and two women, tragically lost their lives in a fatal road crash at Obretema near Suhum along the Accra-Kumasi highway in Eastern Region.
The accident occurred around 4:30 am on Saturday when a VIP bus traveling from Tamale to Accra, with registration number GR 7632-24, collided with a Goil PLC fuel tanker vehicle bearing registration number UE 9644-22.
According to reports, the fuel tanker veered off its lane and crashed head-on into the bus, causing both vehicles to somersault and forcing the bus into a ditch.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service ,Ghana National Fire Service and the Ambulance Service responded quickly to the scene, aiding in evacuating and retrieving the bodies of the deceased, which were later deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital.
Many injured passengers some in critical conditions were transported to Suhum government hospital for emergency medical attention.
The Suhum police are appealing to the public to inform relatives of those who may have been traveling on the bus to assist with identification at the Suhum hospital.
Ghana continue to grapple with alarming tragic crashes.
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) recently reported that 6,653 road crashes were recorded between January to June of 2024, involving 11,283 vehicles and resulting in 8,798 casualties, with 1,237 fatalities and 7,561 injuries.
Many of these accidents have been attributed to wrongful overtaking and failure to observe traffic regulations.
Despite a decrease in knockdowns, the number of fatalities has risen by 13% compared to the same period in 2023, indicating an urgent need for stricter road safety measures.
