Three suspects have been arrested by the Eastern Regional Police Command for unlawful possession of narcotics and attempting to bribe police officers with GH¢100,000 during an intelligence-led operation in the Eastern Region.

According to the police, the operation conducted on May 10, 2026, led to the seizure of 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp believed to be destined for Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Eastern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Bridget Opoku, the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) acted on a tip-off about narcotics allegedly hidden at Akosombo-Bonya.

The statement said police officers mounted surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School and intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15 before tracking it to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital.

“Police intervened as suspects were transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda Tipper Truck with registration number GN 7948-21,” the statement said.

Police disclosed that although the initial suspects fled into the bush upon seeing the officers, the two vehicles and the suspected narcotics were secured.

The statement further indicated that a 39-year-old welder identified as Solomon Tettey later approached officers and claimed ownership of both the vehicles and the consignment.

“Suspect Solomon Tettey stated that the illegal consignment was bound for Nigeria,” the police noted.

According to the release, the suspect attempted to compromise the investigation by offering officers a GH¢100,000 bribe.
“In an attempt to compromise the investigation, suspect Solomon Tettey offered the officers a bribe of GH¢100,000. Police personnel feigned interest to secure evidence of the bribery,” the statement added.

Police said the suspect transferred GH¢90,000 through Mobile Money and added GH¢10,000 cash before backup personnel from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and Odumase Police moved in to arrest him.

Two other suspects, identified as Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later arrested after reporting themselves at the Regional Police Headquarters.

The suspects and exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.

“The Ghana Police Service reiterates its commitment to integrity and the relentless pursuit of drug trafficking syndicates within the region,” the statement stressed.
