Former President John Dramani Mahama has advised government to discontinue the public funding of the national cathedral project amid the country’s dire economic situation.
He said he agrees with most Ghanaians who believe that the project cannot constitute a top priority of government at this moment, “warranting further injection of scarce public funds.”
Speaking on the Ghanaian economy on Thursday at UPSA in Accra, Mr Mahama criticised the non-transparency of the procurements associated with the project.
“I believe that the project should be subjected to a value for money audit in other to open the way for believers who wish to contribute to its construction to do so,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said it’s imperative for government to suspend all non-essential projects such as the 116 million Euro new Accra International Conference Centre and construction of new embassy buildings for new missions abroad.
“In our current economic state, public funds must go into projects that are necessary and which meet the pressing needs of our people in the communities.
“Such projects must have tangible and measurable impact on job creation and national development,” he noted.
