EC’s letter on Joana Gyan is the biggest joke – NDC

Western Regional Communication Officer for the NDC, Kirk Mensah, has stated that the letter from the Electoral Commission (EC) disqualifying the NDC Amenfi Central Parliamentary Candidate, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, is one of the biggest jokes in our political dispensation.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially disqualified Joana Gyan Cudjoe from running as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central in the 2024 Parliamentary elections.

This decision follows a petition referencing a pending court order for an interlocutory injunction, which barred the Commission from recognizing Madam Cudjoe as the party’s parliamentary candidate.

According to a letter signed by the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the Commission was alerted to an Order for Interlocutory Injunction against the candidacy of the NDC PC dated May 31, 2024.

Speaking on Morning Starr, the NDC Communication Officer stated that the letter is one of the biggest jokes because the Electoral Commission disqualified the NDC Amenfi Central PC without conducting the necessary investigation. According to him, the letter disqualifying the PC was dated October 10, 2024which was before the EC wrote to the court for verification on the issue on October 16, 2024.

He stated,” As a party, we see the letter from the Electoral Commission as one of the biggest jokes in our political dispensation. It is a joke. You see, as an institution, the Electoral Commission is one of the most revered institutions before. But now it has reduced its competency to the lowest level, and sometimes we phantom how they sit back and take decisions and act upon such decisions. How can you write a letter disqualifying a candidate based on court proceedings?  Then six days later after you have written such a letter, you write to the court for verification of that same matter you put all your hopes and based your argument on, and they took a decision.”

He further explained that the EC’s disqualification was based on an election that was nullified and a new one has even been held and supervised by the EC.

“A fresh election was held, and it was supervised by the Electoral Commission representative of the district. And Joana Cudjoe became the first candidate of the NDC, which made the previous election that was held last year null and void. So how come the electoral commission, which has a representative of the district, will write a letter citing the case that has been nullified, the election has been nullified, whereas a new election has been held,’ the Communication officer said.
