The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says he will not debate Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 election.
According to the former President, he will not elevate the New Patriotic Patriotic (NPP) flag bearer by debating him.
As part of his fourth-phase campaign in the Greater Accra Region, former President John Dramani Mahama engaged with supporters in Old Ningo, within the Ningo Prampram constituency, today.
The event is part of Mahama’s ongoing effort to garner support ahead of the upcoming national elections, as he seeks to return to the presidency.
During the session, Mahama addressed a call from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for a presidential debate between Mahama and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The former president swiftly rejected the idea, stating, “I won’t debate Bawumia. I won’t elevate him to my level.” Mahama’s statement suggests a firm stance on the hierarchy within Ghana’s political leadership and the role he believes Vice President Bawumia occupies.
The call for a debate comes as the country heads toward a highly anticipated election, with both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) mobilizing efforts to secure votes. President Akufo-Addo’s challenge reflects the increasing political tension between the two parties, particularly with Bawumia positioned as a leading figure within the NPP.
Mahama’s rejection of the debate signals his continued focus on the broader presidential contest, maintaining his strategy of directly addressing the president and his record, rather than engaging with the vice president.
