Effia MP, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko Esq., has openly apologised to Ghanaians for areas where the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fell short during its governance, specifically citing the introduction of the electronic transaction levy (e-levy) and a lack of ministerial reshuffles.
Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Starr 103.5 FM on Thursday, October 2, Boamah-Nyarko acknowledged that the party did not sufficiently listen to the concerns of the public before implementing certain policies.
“For some of the reasons that we lost the elections in 2024… one area I believe is that at some point in our second term we were not listening to the concerns of the masses,” he said. He singled out the e-levy, explaining that although it was intended to boost revenue, Ghanaians largely opposed it. “Even if it went against them, we should have engaged the people and explored alternatives. What we did was not good enough,” he added.
The MP also criticised the party’s handling of ministerial appointments. He said long-term incumbency in certain positions stifled fresh ideas and limited participation in decision-making. “Over an eight-year period, someone shouldn’t stay in one particular position for that long. You should change, allow others to step in, and get everybody involved in the decision-making process,” he noted.
Despite these admissions, Boamah-Nyarko emphasised that the party’s achievements, including the implementation of free SHS, improvements in road infrastructure, and the Agenda 111 healthcare initiative, should not be overlooked. However, he insisted that acknowledging shortcomings is equally important.
“We owe it to the good people of Ghana to apologise to them… That NPP as a political party could have done better in these areas and others, irrespective of the good things that we did… We still ought to let the Ghanaian people understand that we’re sorry for the other aspects that we didn’t do well, and given the next opportunity, and we have said it time and again, that we’ll do better and we’ll listen,” he said.
