Election 2024: Ashanti region NDC warns gov’t against military intimidation

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi has warned that the party will resist any attempt by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to intimidate NDC members and sympathizers in the Ashanti region during the December 7th elections.

The party claims they are aware of malicious intentions behind the transfer of Brigadier General Michael Opoku to the region as General Officer Commander for the 4th Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces to the region.

Mr. Andrews Nana Kwasi has assured that the NDC would make his stay in the region uncomfortable if he failed to work as a professional military officer.

Nana Kwasi gave the warning while addressing Asawase NDC sympathizers during the party’s constituency campaign launch at Aboabo in Kumasi after a health walk on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

“I have a message for the President of Ghana, Akufo-Addo, and the army commander that we are aware of the motive behind the transfer. We are aware of what he can do. I want to tell him that if he has any evil agenda against the NDC, he should dare not try it here. We are telling him that we are ready for him in this election. We will resist any attempt for the military to be used to intimidate us in this election. What we want is free and fair elections devoid of military intimidation,” he added.

The Regional Chairman assured that the NDC is fully prepared to abide by all fair security measures the security agency will adopt for the elections.

“As NDC, we are always law-abiding people, but we will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election. What the NPP did to us with the support of some security personnel in elections 2024 is buried and gone, but we will make sure such events never repeat themselves in elections 2024,” he reiterated.

Mr. Andrews Nana Kwasi urged the party supporters to remain focused on various responsibilities assigned to them from the polling stations level to the regional levels until their respective parliamentary candidates, including Muntaka Mohammed and former President John Mahama, are declared winners by the Electoral Commission.

“So, go and do door-to-door and room-to-room campaigns in the region. Share the vision of His Excellency the former President Mahama with the electorate. And compare the economic records of the NDC with the NPP, and let the people know what the return of former President Mahama will do for this country.”

He commended the NDC supporters in the Asawase constituency for approaching the 2024 general elections with a different unity style.
