Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor has urged renewed and coordinated efforts to address Ghana’s declining oil production.
He made the call during a working visit to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and its upstream subsidiary, GNPC Explorco, aimed at engaging management and staff, reviewing progress, and discussing strategies to address the decline in Ghana’s oil production.

Addressing management of both GNPC and GNPC Explorco, the Minister commended the teams for their dedication to Ghana’s upstream petroleum development. However, he expressed concern over the country’s continued drop in crude oil output and challenged both institutions to take decisive steps to reverse the trend.
“Our oil production has been declining over the past few years, and that is a matter of concern for all of us,” he said. “GNPC and its subsidiary Explorco must take the lead in reversing this trend through aggressive exploration, innovation, and strategic partnerships. We must do everything possible to sustain production and safeguard Ghana’s energy future.”

GNPC Explorco, a subsidiary of GNPC, was established to deepen Ghanaian participation in exploration, enhance local capacity, and promote national ownership of oil and gas resources.
GNPC Chief Executive Officer, Kwame Ntow Amoah, welcomed the Minister’s visit and assured him of the Corporation’s commitment to addressing the production decline.

“We fully share the Minister’s concerns,” he stated. “GNPC is working closely with Explorco and our partners to identify new opportunities, increase reserves, and enhance operational efficiency. Our goal is to ensure that GNPC remains a strong pillar in Ghana’s energy transition and economic development.”
Managing Director of GNPC Explorco, Sam Arthur, briefed the Minister on ongoing exploration activities and efforts to bolster Ghana’s technical capabilities in the upstream sector. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to fulfilling its mandate.

The Minister’s visit to GNPC and GNPC Explorco forms part of his broader tour of agencies under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition aimed at strengthening collaboration, improving operational efficiency, and aligning institutional efforts with government’s energy objectives.
