The President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, is urging fairness in the work of the Justice Brobbey commission, probing demands for the creation of new regions in the country.

According to Togbe Afede, a fair consultative process would ensure that recommendations of the commission will be acceptable to the masses.

The revered chief was speaking when the nine-member commission met members of the Volta region house of chiefs in Ho, as it begins public consultations in the region on the demand for the creation of a new region for Northern Volta.

Togbe Afede however indicated that whatever the outcome of the process might be, it must bring about accelerated development to the people.

“In everything that we do…it is important that we respect the dictates of the constitution and also we do those things in the context of the most important desire for our people,” he told the nine-member commission.

“I have also emphasised that the most important desire of our people is for development—development that enhances our standards of living, development that brings in abundance our needs, social and economics. Of course, development that ensures that our people [will] have jobs and [are] also happy and therefore live in peace. These are all important if we have to strengthen our unity and stability.

“It is in the same spirit that we have to conduct this exercise of deciding whether Volta region is better as one, two or three and therefore, I urge fairness. Fairness has been a missing ingredient in most of the black world. Whenever people have to cheat there is disharmony and there cannot be a peace and unity that will bring development,” he added.

On his part, chairman of the commission, Justice Stephen Brobbey said his team was only on a fact finding mission to inform their recommendations to the government on whether or not to carry out the demands.

Having heard the petitioners, he said the consultations will involve public hearings in Ho, Keta Krachi, Nkwanta, Kpasa and Jasikan.

He said the commission is expected to conclude its consultations in the Volta region on Saturday January 20, 2018.
