The Food and Drugs Authority has recalled batches of Nestlé Ghana’s ideal milk and carnation milk from markets across the country.
This follows concerns over coagulation of the milk product from consumers.
On the 10th of January, consumers took to social media to register their displeasure, noticing the coagulation after purchasing the aforementioned products.
In response to the concerns raised, the FDA in a press release now reveals that the raw material used to produce the milk, skimmed milk powder, has poor heat stability, hence the coagulation.
“Results from the analysis indicated that there was no microbial contamination of samples and therefore is no food safety issue with the said coagulated milk products from Nestlé… So far, the root cause analysis indicates that the skimmed milk powder (raw material) used to produce the milk complained of has poor heat stability. This results in the denaturing of the protein leading to coagulation of the milk“, the statement said.
While the substandard goods were beginning to cause panic across the market, the FDA is reassuring the public that the products pose no health risk. That notwithstanding, it has recalled batches of the evaporated milk products from the market.
“As of January 9, 2022, a total of 57,938 cans of the products have been retrieved by Nestle nationwide. The process is being monitored by the FDA.”
The FDA cfurther commends consumers for their alertness and impressed upon members of the public in possession of the affected batches of the milk products to return them to Nestle or any FDA offices nationwide.
“The FDA wishes to commend consumers for their alertness and to encourage them to continue reporting issues observed with any of its regulated products for the appropriate regulatory measures to be taken to ensure the health and safety of the public,” the statement said.
Producer of the milk products, Nestlé CWAR is yet to comment on the matter.
