The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed that a major fire incident at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has led to disruptions in power generation and supply across various parts of the country.
According to a statement from its Corporate Communications Section, the fire reportedly started at approximately 2:01 p.m. today, Tuesday.
The fire, the statement continued, forced an immediate halt in operations at the facility.
GRIDCo revealed that emergency response teams were deployed to the site shortly after the alarm was raised and have since been working “around the clock” to contain the situation and evaluate the extent of the damage.
The statement said further that technical personnel are currently conducting a full evaluation to determine the cause of the incident.
“Our technical teams are actively working to manage the situation, and every effort is being made to stabilise the system and minimise disruptions,” the statement read.
The Akosombo Substation is a critical node in the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS).
