A tragic collision between a DAF truck (registration AW 9548-13) and a Toyota Hiace passenger van (registration GC 9728-21) at Wakrom Junction near Yamoransa on the Cape Coast–Accra Highway has claimed five lives and left 12 others injured.
According to the Central Regional Headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), rescue officers responded to a distress call around 2:45 pm on Monday, September 15, 2025.
The crash involved the DAF truck, which was carrying 700 bags of rice, and the Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle.
GHOne News’ Yaw Boagyan reported that 12 passengers were rescued and rushed to hospital before the GNFS rescue team arrived. Upon arrival, firefighters extricated five more victims trapped in the wreckage.
The injured were taken to Biriwa Polyclinic and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where four people were pronounced dead shortly after arrival, and a fifth victim was later confirmed dead.
The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the busy highway. Fortunately, the driver and mate of the truck escaped without injuries.
In a statement to GHOne News, Doll Abdul Wasiu Hudu, PRO of the Central Regional GNFS, shared insights about the rescue efforts:
“Our team responded promptly to the distress call. Upon arrival, we found the vehicles badly damaged with several victims trapped inside. We conducted a coordinated extraction to rescue the injured and recover the deceased. It’s a reminder of how important road safety is, especially on busy highways like this.”
“It was a terrifying sight. The truck and the taxi collided violently, and people were screaming for help. Some passengers were trapped, but others managed to get out on their own. The road was blocked for hours, and emergency teams worked hard to help the victims.”
