After months of frustration over the deplorable state of the Ofankor-Nsawam highway, relief is finally in sight for commuters as the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has directed the contractor, Maripoma, to return to the site and resume work immediately.
The $346.47 million project, which began on July 20, 2022, was originally scheduled for completion by July 20, 2024. But it was abandoned due to an outstanding $45 million debt owed to the contractor, leaving major sections of the highway incomplete. As a result, motorists and residents endured severe traffic congestion and choking dust, despite repeated complaints about the road’s worsening condition.
Following successful discussions over the weekend, Mr. Agbodza announced on Monday, April 2, during an inspection tour of the project, that an agreement had been reached for the contractor to resume work while the government finalizes payment arrangements.
“The Ofankor-Nsawam road had been abandoned for some time, but we have been engaging the contractor, and we came to the conclusion that, effective immediately, they should return to the site while we conclude the modalities to pay them,” he assured.
The minister acknowledged the hardship faced by commuters and assured them that the government is committed to addressing the situation.
“For those who are frustrated, the government is aware and feels your pain. Help is on the way,” he said, adding that he expects Maripoma to begin mobilizing within three days to restart construction.
