Dr. Sampson Anomah, Convener for Concerned Members of Organized Labour has called on the Organized Labour to suspend their planned nationwide strike scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024.
This follows Organized Labour’s planned nationwide strike scheduled for October 10, despite the government’s recently announced efforts to address the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Organized Labour has been advocating a more robust response to the illegal mining crisis, including calls for the president to declare a state of emergency and introduce long-term measures to combat the issue.
Speaking on Starr today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Dr. Sampson Anomah expressed strong opposition to a nationwide strike being championed by Organized Labour to protest against illegal mining also known as galamsey, citing a lack of consultation and potential harm to innocent patients.
“They should have first consulted us”, he added.
He argues that Organized Labour’s decision was made without their input and that a strike would put patients’ lives at risk. “You’re asking for a nationwide strike, and you’re also asking for a nationwide demonstration, and you don’t know when the strike and you don’t know when it’s going to end.
“If you ask medical doctors to go on strike, and you don’t know when it’s going to end, what do you think you are doing to the people? The people, the innocent people who get sick and will be going to the hospital.”
He emphasized that he’s not against the fight against illegal mining, “but believes the strike is ill-timed, especially with elections are just two months away.”
Dr. Anomah also added that even though he is in solidarity with Organised Labour in the fight against illegal small-scale mining, doctors will not participate in the strike.
“This is a national interest issue. So the whole nation must collaboratively think and solve it.”
