Ghana’s women’s national table tennis team, the Black Loopers, have etched their names into the sport’s history books after sealing qualification for the 2026 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships in London. This marks Ghana’s triumphant return to the global stage after several years of absence.
The feat came after a thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over Angola at the ongoing ITTF-Africa Championships in Tunis, Tunisia a tournament that also serves as the continental qualifier for London 2026.
Despite suffering an early setback against African giants Egypt, the Ghanaian ladies showed incredible resilience and determination to bounce back when it mattered most. Their decisive match against Angola tested every ounce of their resolve, as they clawed back from two games down to claim an unforgettable victory.
Cynthia Kwabi opened the contest but narrowly lost 2–3 to Ruth Tavares, followed by Eva Adom-Amankwah’s 1–3 defeat to Albino Isabel, leaving Ghana trailing. However, Joanita Borteye inspired a turnaround with a dominant 3–0 win over Sousa Kailane, before Kwabi returned to sweep Albino Isabel 3–0, leveling the tie. In a nerve-wracking decider, Eva Adom-Amankwah held her composure to edge Ruth Tavares 3–2 sealing Ghana’s place in London in dramatic fashion.
With the victory, Ghana finished second in their group, earning a coveted continental qualification ticket.
The Black Loopers’ qualification comes at a fitting time as the 2026 World Championships mark the 100th anniversary of the ITTF, adding a layer of symbolism to Ghana’s historic return to world competition.
The Black Loopers’ resilience, teamwork, and passion have not only reignited Ghana’s presence in global table tennis but also inspired a new generation of athletes to believe in the power of perseverance.
