Ghana has begun sending its health professionals overseas under the Ghana Labour Export Programme, with the first batch of 121 workers departing for Antigua and Barbuda to provide critical services in the Caribbean.
At a farewell ceremony at Kotoka International Airport, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh revealed that the country currently has over 80,000 trained health professionals who are unemployed due to budgetary constraints.
He explained that the programme aims to create international employment opportunities for these skilled professionals while strengthening Ghana’s bilateral ties with partner countries.
Minister of State in Charge of Special Initiatives, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, added that the programme will expand beyond the health sector to include other skills, noting that applicants must meet specific requirements for each overseas position.
He also disclosed that discussions with the Australian High Commissioner have opened further opportunities for Ghanaians seeking work abroad.
Some of the departing nurses expressed their excitement and pledged to give their best while representing Ghana on the international stage.
The Ghana Labour Export Programme marks a significant step in addressing unemployment among skilled workers while promoting Ghana’s human capital globally.
