President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will become the first African country to make a financial contribution to the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM).
He made the declaration at the closing ceremony of the High-Level International Conference on Information Integrity and Independent Media in Paris, France, where world leaders and media stakeholders gathered to advance global cooperation on information integrity.
President Mahama said the contribution reflects Ghana’s conviction that independent journalism and reliable information are indispensable public goods, vital for sustaining democracy and development.
“I am proud to declare that Ghana will become the first African country to make a financial contribution to the International Fund for Public Interest Media. This gesture reflects our conviction that independent journalism and reliable information are indispensable public goods,” he stated.

He emphasised that the time had come for nations to translate shared ideals into tangible action by supporting public interest media and protecting information integrity.
The President urged other countries to demonstrate genuine commitment to the cause, stressing that the global fight against misinformation and disinformation must be collective and sustained.

The Paris conference concluded with renewed political and financial commitments to replenish the International Fund for Public Interest Media, targeting €130 million between 2026 and 2028 to support independent journalism worldwide.
