Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has disconnected Adwoa Wangara Apartments in Cantonments, Accra, for allegedly engaging in an illegal water connection.
The enforcement action took place on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, following a tip-off that prompted a field inspection by GWL officials.
According to GWL, the decades-old apartment complex had consistently failed to pay its water bills, with management claiming they relied solely on borehole water for their operations since the facility’s inception. However, a technical assessment of the premises revealed otherwise.
During the inspection, GWL officials uncovered a dual-line water system in the building’s basement, where a large reservoir was actively being filled with water traced to GWL’s supply lines—not a borehole as claimed.
After disconnecting the apartment’s main water lines externally, officials confirmed the illegal connection, as the flow of water into the reservoir ceased immediately.
GWL has since announced plans to take legal action against the management of Adwoa Wangara Apartments for unauthorised use of its services.
Regional Communications Manager for GWL’s Accra East Region, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, stated that any GWL staff member found to have aided the illegal connection would also face legal consequences and potential dismissal.
He further cautioned the public against engaging in illegal water connections, reaffirming the company’s zero-tolerance policy on water theft and its commitment to revenue protection.
“This is part of our intensified revenue mobilisation drive, and such infractions will not be tolerated,” he stressed.
