President John Dramani Mahama says the decision by Ghana and Zambia to allow visa-free travel between their citizens is not just a routine diplomatic agreement, but a symbol of deep trust and shared identity.
Speaking at a state banquet held in his honour by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema in Lusaka, Mahama described the visa-free arrangement as a statement of unity between the two nations.
“The agreements we signed today, especially the decision to allow visa-free travel between our two countries, are more than diplomatic instruments,” he said.
“They are statements of trust, and they say to our people, you belong with one another.”
Mahama said the warmth of his reception in Lusaka and the ease of engagement between both leaders reaffirmed the strength of Ghana–Zambia relations.
“From the moment I arrived in Lusaka, I have felt genuinely at home. The warmth of your welcome at the airport, the ease of our conversations, and the generosity extended to my delegation remind me why Ghana and Zambia share a bond that goes far beyond diplomacy,” he stated.
He traced the friendship between both countries to the legacy of their founding leaders, Kwame Nkrumah and Kenneth Kaunda, who championed African unity and solidarity.
“This is not a relationship of convenience. It is a relationship of history, shared struggle, and a deep belief in Africa’s destiny,” Mahama said.
The President also praised the areas of cooperation agreed during the visit, including health, education, air transport and defence, stressing the need for “African solutions to African challenges.”
Mahama said the visit had strengthened confidence in the future of Ghana–Zambia relations and expressed optimism about the outcomes.
“I leave Zambia encouraged by the outcomes of this visit. Yes, but even more by the spirit in which this visit has been conducted,” he said.
