The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intensified its enforcement and national security operations in line with the government’s 24-hour economy policy, prosecuting 13 individuals for crimes including human trafficking, illegal entry, and document forgery.
This was revealed by Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 14, 2025.
In addition to these prosecutions, the GIS rescued 21 victims of human trafficking and arrested 223 people for immigration-related breaches.
The Service also intercepted 291 irregular migrants and removed 1,617 foreigners from the country for various offences under Sections 20 and 21 of the Immigration Act, Act 573.
Mr. Muntaka disclosed that the GIS has developed a dedicated policy paper on its 24-hour operational strategy, which is being implemented from its headquarters to enhance efficiency and response in border security management.
The Immigration Service also analyzed 263 suspected document fraud cases, identifying 111 as fraudulent.
These interventions helped prevent identity theft and related crimes.
In the same period, GIS personnel seized large quantities of smuggled goods, including 406 bags of cocoa beans, over 1,100 jerry cans of unapproved substances, 11 bags of fertilizer, 50 gallons of fuel, and impounded a vehicle suspected to be used in illegal operations.
Increased inter-agency collaboration was cited as a key factor in the effectiveness of these operations, enabling improved coordination in crime prevention and public safety.
The Interior Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to bolstering the capacity of national security institutions, particularly the Immigration Service, to maintain border integrity and support the 24-hour economic framework.
