The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has rejected claims by the Member of Parliament for Tano South and Tano North MP and Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr. Gideon Boako, that the institution owes the Bank of Ghana (BoG) an unpaid overdraft of GHS1 billion.
GoldBod described the claim as “totally false” and part of what it characterised as a deliberate and malicious smear campaign against the institution.
In a statement signed by its Media Relations Officer, Prince Kwame Minkah, GoldBod said it has never taken a loan, overdraft or any debt instrument from the Bank of Ghana or any financial institution since its establishment.
“For the records, the GoldBod has never at any time since its establishment taken a loan, overdraft or any debt instrument from the Bank of Ghana or any financial institution whatsoever,” the statement said.
The institution described the claim attributed to Dr. Boako as “contrived” and urged the public to treat it with “utmost contempt.”
GoldBod further called on the Tano South MP to unequivocally retract the claim and apologise for what it described as the dissemination of false information.
Dr Gideon Boako has claimed that the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) owes the Bank of Ghana (BoG) about GH¢1 billion in overdraft, arguing that the outstanding liability should be considered when assessing the institution’s reported financial performance.
While speaking on Adom TV on Monday, August 24, Dr Boako questioned the basis for describing GoldBod as profitable if the institution’s books reflect the reported overdraft from the central bank.
“I’ve heard people say that the GoldBod says they made a profit of GH¢907m profit but that cannot be true because GoldBod took GH¢1bn overdraft from Bank of Ghana and if that is reflected in their books, they’ll actually be in a loss,” he claimed.
