The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed the legal recognition of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba, following its acceptance of the findings and recommendations of the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report.

In an official statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, government said its position is consistent with the law as upheld by the Supreme Court, stressing that no individual or group is permitted under any circumstances to challenge the authority or legitimacy of the Bawku Naba.

The statement explained that the affirmation forms part of government’s full endorsement of the mediation report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, which is aimed at achieving lasting peace, reconciliation and stability in Bawku and surrounding areas.

As part of the mediation outcomes, government accepted the recommendation that Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who was installed as a rival claimant to the Bawku chieftaincy, be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri to assume an alternative traditional role. Government said it would immediately facilitate his safe movement to Nalerigu, where he is to remain available to receive directives from the Nayiri.

Government further announced the establishment of a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund to address the socio-economic impact of the protracted conflict. The fund will be disbursed between 2026 and 2028 to support the reconstruction of priority infrastructure, including roads, healthcare facilities, schools, markets, irrigation systems and security installations.

The statement also called on traditional authorities, political leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations, religious bodies and residents to support the peace-building and reconciliation process in the interest of national unity and stability.
