Government has condemned the attempted arrest of JoyNews journalist Carlos Carlony and the alleged assault of an eyewitness by a soldier during a demolition operation at a warehouse reportedly linked to businessman Daniel McKorley, also known as McDan.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 30, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said President John Mahama is deeply concerned about the incident and has ordered immediate action.
Describing the soldier’s actions as “completely unacceptable,” the government emphasized that such behavior undermines democratic values and violates the rights of citizens, particularly journalists whose role is essential to a free society.
President Mahama has tasked the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to carry out an urgent investigation and ensure swift punitive action against the personnel involved.
The statement reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to press freedom and journalist safety, highlighting the role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability.
“Such actions are utterly unacceptable to the John Mahama administration and have no place in our democratic society. I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists,” the statement said.
