Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has outlined ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening Ghana’s electricity generation through renewable sources.

Speaking on day two of the Government Accountability Series, Mr. Jinapor disclosed that 200 megawatts of solar energy projects are currently being developed across the country.

He further revealed the construction of a 25MW floating solar plant at the Bui Hydropower Station, which will bring the total capacity there to 30MW.

The project, he noted, is being executed with floaters manufactured locally, in line with the government’s local content policy. Additionally, the Volta River Authority is developing a 30MW floating solar facility at the Kpong hydro reservoir, funded by KfW.

The minister explained that the integration of solar during the day and hydro at night will enable the hydro dams to function as a form of energy storage, thereby extending their lifespan and improving power stability nationwide.

He said, “A 25 Megawatts floating plant is being built at the Bui Hydropower Station, to bring the total capacity to 30 Megawatts, with the floaters being manufactured locally in line with our local content participation policy. The Volta River Authority (VRA) is also developing a 30 Megawatss floating facility at the Kpong hydro reservoir and is being funded by KfW. “

The Minister stressed that the integration of solar and hydro resources is critical to ensuring a reliable, cleaner, and more cost-effective electricity supply for the country.

“What we seeking to doing is that we are deploying a lot of solar panels to feed into grid so day time we’ll depend on the solar panel and in the night, we’ll switch to hydro power, so that the hydro dams, more or less become like a battery storage in that way we can bring about longevity in how we manage our hydro dams.”
