The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has stepped in to resolve the heated debate over the cost of residential facility fees.
Last month, the University Council approved a fee increase from GHS2,000 to GHS3,000, sparking outrage among students who described the 50% hike as unfair.
But following a crucial meeting with the Vice Chancellor student leaders, and the University Council, the residential user fee has been slashed from 3,000 cedis to 2,500.
“With Doctor Margaret, I support you but I want peace on the campuses, and I want Madame Vice Chancellor to be able to manage demands for the availability of utility of water and electricity.
“So given that she was at three thousand and given that you are looking at a possible reduction. She will serve you a notice against the new academic year. The government will see what it will do with the burdensome nature of accommodating the utility and charges. So it is now 24% across board”, the Minister stated.
Therefore after weeks of agitations, students of the University of Ghana can finally have a sigh of relief.
