Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that government will move to revoke the much-disputed Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 and replace it with a new framework when Parliament reconvenes on October 14.
Addressing stakeholders at an anti-galamsey dialogue convened by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Friday, Dr. Ayine revealed that his office has completed work on a new regulation, LI 2505, which is set to be laid before the House.
“We have prepared an instrument that is LI 2505 in my office, and that will be laid in Parliament on the 14th of October,” he said, stressing that the decision had been reached in consultation with the Lands and Natural Resources Minister.
He added, “The Minister and I have agreed that on the 14th of October, when Parliament resumes, we will lay that instrument to revoke the famous LI 2462.”
The Attorney General’s remarks come as government intensifies efforts to tighten its legal framework on illegal mining, which has fueled widespread environmental destruction and public concern.
Dr. Ayine also reiterated his directive for NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), to present himself in Accra by Monday, October 6, to respond to charges relating to Akonta Mining Limited’s operations.
He warned that failure to comply would trigger an arrest order.
