President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will invest over GH¢2 billion in healthcare infrastructure between 2025 and 2028 to expand, modernize, and improve access to medical facilities nationwide.

Speaking at the Meet the Press on Wednesday, September 10, the President highlighted that an initial GH¢200 million has already been allocated in the 2025 budget to accelerate the construction, expansion, and renovation of hospitals, clinics, and health centers.

Whether in remote rural areas, smaller communities, or high-density urban centers, President Mahama emphasized that the government’s goal remains “a health facility within reach of every Ghanaian.”

The investment comes alongside a 13.4% increase in the national health budget for 2025, which rises from GH¢15.6 billion to GH¢17.8 billion, and a 66% increase in funding to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), now at GH¢9.8 billion.

“This bold step reflects our recognition of the urgent need to strengthen Ghana’s health care system in the face of both domestic demands and global health risks,” President Mahama stated.

He noted that the government has adjusted domestic priorities following the sudden withdrawal of $156 million in U.S. aid that previously supported malaria, HIV, and child health programs.

The President reiterated that these resources will be directed towards improving coverage, claims processing, and ensuring that “every Ghanaian, especially the poor and vulnerable, has access to affordable quality health care.”
