President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to restore Ghana’s soul and revive its economy, framing the December 7 elections as a “national reawakening” for the country’s political and economic direction.
Speaking at his first media briefing on Wednesday, September 10, the President said the polls were not merely about choosing new leadership but about delivering honesty, accountability, and a reset in governance.
“The December 7 election was a national reawakening. It was a change of call, not just for leadership, but a change of direction, honesty, accountability, and a reset.
“It was a different kind of government, one that listens and one that acts and cares. I knew we had inherited a nation that was tired of excuses by the political elite, weighed down by hardships and yearning for leadership that performs and not just promises,” he said.
“We’re here to restore the soul of the nation and revive its economy,” he assured
Highlighting his administration’s priorities, Mahama unveiled a major healthcare investment plan, pledging over GH¢2 billion from 2025 to 2028 to modernize and expand hospitals, clinics, and health centers nationwide.
An initial GH¢200 million has been allocated in the 2025 budget to fast-track construction, renovations, and upgrades, including in remote and underserved areas. “This is about bringing health facilities within reach of every Ghanaian,” he emphasized.
The announcement accompanies a 13.4% increase in the national health budget to GH¢17.8 billion and a 66% rise in funding for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), now totaling GH¢9.8 billion. Mahama described the funding as “not just a budget line, it’s a life-saving commitment,” aimed at expanding coverage, improving claims processing, and supporting vulnerable populations.
He noted that the government reprioritized domestic resources to fill a $156 million shortfall left by the sudden withdrawal of U.S. aid that previously supported malaria, HIV, and child health programs.
