Gov’t Urges FanMilk Ghana to Champion Intra-African Trade to Boost Youth Employment

As Africa intensifies efforts to unlock the full potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Government has called on FanMilk Ghana to spearhead a regional trade initiative that would not only boost commerce but also serve as a catalyst for youth employment.

Speaking at the 65th anniversary celebration of FanMilk Ghana, Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness, Sampson Ahi stressed the urgent need to tap into the continental market by leveraging strong local brands like FanMilk, which has maintained a solid presence in West Africa.

“FanMilk Ghana has made remarkable contributions over the past 65 years by supporting the growth of Ghana’s economy and creating jobs. However, intra-African trade remains low currently around 14% among member states. This presents a significant opportunity.

“I challenge FanMilk to expand its market to neighboring countries such as Togo, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso. Doing so will not only create jobs for our brothers and sisters across the region but will also boost working capital and position FanMilk as a major economic player in the sub-region.

“We are also in the process of finalizing the modalities for implementing the 24-hour economy. As part of this, there will be a tax component designed to support companies that wish to participate in this initiative.”

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of FanMilk Ghana & Francos, Lionel Parent stressed the deep emotional and cultural connection the brand shares with Ghanaians:

“FanMilk is a part of Ghana’s collective memory. From the first taste of FanIce to the sound of a vendor’s bell bringing joy to consumers, we’ve been with Ghanaians every step of the way. ‘65 Years of Spreading Joy’ reflects the lives we’ve touched, the dreams we’ve supported, and the moments we’ve shared together.”

A cornerstone of FanMilk’s legacy is its network of vendors, affectionately called Chief Enjoyment Officers, who have served as the face of the brand for decades.

“FanMilk has created sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of thousands of Ghanaians through this vendor ecosystem. The company has also impacted the next generation through initiatives such as the FanMilk School Caravan, which has reached over 390,000 students and collected 6.6 million wrappers—promoting environmental awareness from an early age.”

About Fan Milk Plc (Ghana):

Fan Milk Plc, a Danone company, is a leading manufacturer and distributor of dairy products and beverages in Ghana. Committed to high standards of quality and sustainability, the company continues to provide refreshing and delicious products to its customers.

FanMilk’s commitment to environmental stewardship is exemplified by its state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility. Wastewater from factory processes is thoroughly treated before being released into the Korle River. This treated water also supports a thriving fishpond, demonstrating circular resource use.

The 1,100 m³/day treatment plant not only meets Ghana’s environmental standards but also the more stringent global standards set by Danone. The facility became fully operational after the successful validation of all performance tests.

Fan Milk PLC — the heritage brand that holds a special place in the hearts of Ghanaians — remains committed to delivering quality, sustainability, and joy.
