As part of ongoing reforms in Ghana’s education system, Senior High School (SHS) students will soon have the opportunity to study one major foreign language alongside their core academic subjects.
This was announced by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the launch of the National Free Sanitary Pads initiative held at the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools in Mamprobi, Accra.
Addressing students and dignitaries at the event, President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the importance of equipping students with global competencies. He stated that it is his vision for every Ghanaian student at the SHS level to be given the option to choose one foreign language; French, Spanish, German, Chinese, or another compulsory language tailored to complement their field of study.
“It is also the vision and dream of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that from senior high school, every Ghanaian student will have an option to choose between one major foreign language French, Spanish, German, Chinese, or any other compulsory language to accompany your area of study. That will also be introduced as part of our review of curricula,” the President said.
The Education Minister further explained that the move is intended to better prepare Ghanaian students for the global job market, promote multiculturalism, and boost the country’s international competitiveness. The foreign language component will be introduced at the SHS 2 level as part of the broader curriculum review initiative currently underway.
The announcement was made during a ceremony that also marked the launch of a national policy to provide free sanitary pads to female students, a program aimed at improving menstrual hygiene and school attendance among girls.
