Pupils of the Anyirawase D/A Primary School in the Ho West district of the Volta region have been compelled to use makeshift desks made of concrete blocks and woods during classes.
This is due to lack of adequate classroom furniture in the school for the use of the pupils, since the last two academic years.
Teachers at the school told Starr news, the situation was not only adversely affecting effective academic work, but also deterring some of the pupils from attending classes.
According to them, “the pupils cannot concentrate in class, because the makeshift desks would just collapse in the middle of a lesson, which ends up disrupting the class for the period. These days too, some of them do not come to school again, as they no longer find comfort in the classrooms.”
Head teacher of the school, Simon Dogbatse disclosed that, attempts to get the community to provide some furniture for the school yielded very little results, as parents lack the resources to do so.
“The SMC [School management Committee] called a meeting and asked parents to get furniture for us, but only two parents brought for their wards. So some days you’ll see children lying down to learn. We’re really suffering,” he told Starr news.
The head teacher further indicated that, the over 60 year old school has not seen any major infrastructure facelift, over the period, whiles efforts to get the pavilion structure renovated yielded no positive response from stakeholders.
According to him a 3-unit classroom block under construction in the school has also been abandoned thus calling on government and benevolent organizations to come to the aid of the school.
