Howard University, a prestigious historically Black institution, has rescinded the honorary degree awarded to Sean “Diddy” Combs.
This decision follows the release of a CCTV video by CNN, showing the hip-hop mogul assaulting an ex-girlfriend in a hotel hallway.
In a statement issued on Friday, the university condemned Combs’ behavior depicted in the video, deeming it fundamentally inconsistent with the core values and principles upheld by Howard University. “Such conduct is unacceptable and cannot be condoned by our institution,” the statement read.
Combs, who received the honorary degree in 2014, responded to the video’s release last month with an apology for his actions toward singer Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura. He expressed deep regret and disgust at his behavior, both at the time and presently. Combs revealed that he has since sought professional help through therapy and rehab, and has sought forgiveness from God.
The university’s statement also highlighted the termination of a scholarship named after Combs and the discontinuation of a 2016 “gift agreement” involving a $1 million donation from his foundation. The Sean Combs Foundation has not commented on Howard University’s decision.
Additionally, the university announced that Combs’ name would be removed from all official records listing recipients of honorary degrees. This move underscores Howard University’s unwavering commitment to opposing all forms of interpersonal violence.
This decision comes amid a series of legal battles for Combs. Four women, including Ms. Ventura, have filed lawsuits accusing him of sexual and physical abuse. Although Ms. Ventura’s lawsuit was settled in November, Combs has consistently denied all allegations of sexual assault.
