Ghana is yet to win a medal at the ongoing International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in London in spite of the potential of the 8 athletes representing the nation.
African countries like Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Cote d’Ivoire and Tanzania are already on the table as at Day 5 of the championships.
Ghana’s top-rated athletes comprise of high jumper Nadia Eke, Sprinters Alex Owusu, Janet Amponsah, Persis William-Mensah, Emmanuel Dasor, Akua Obeng Akrofi, Gemma Acheampong and Flings Owusu Agyapong.
Nadia Eke could not qualify for the final of the Triple Jump with a distance of 13:54m, while Janet Amposah, who had a personal best of 22:90secs placed 4th in her heat by making a time of 23:77secs.
Team Ghana will now have to shift its attention to the likes of Flings Owusu Agyapong who will anchor the 4x100m on Aug. 12.
Kenya is currently placed second on the overall medals table with three gold, one silver and three bronze, South Africa is third with two gold and two bronze, Ethiopia is in the fifth position with one gold and two silver.
Ghana’s woes continued, with Alex Amankwah’s heat 4 of the 800 meter race. The long distance runner for the University of Alabama also failed to make the cut, and came in 4th with the time of 1:47:56.
Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco are placed 17th with one silver each, while Tanzania is 26th on the table with one bronze medal.
The U.S. is first on the table with three gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
The competition which began on Aug. 4 will be concluded on Aug. 13.
