Ghana’s Talamus Health has been adjudged winner of “most scalable solution” accolade at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecom World Awards 2018 held in Durban, South Africa.

The award ceremony was part of the activities of the 2018 ITU Telecom World Conference and Exhibition which was themed, “Innovation for a smarter world” seeking to accelerate ICT innovation for socio-economic development through solutions, sharing knowledge and networking with measures to develop and protect local intellectual property, and a massive skills development program to underpin the growth of ICTs throughout society.

Other objectives of the conference were to harness the power of technology to transform lives, ensure sustainable ICT growth in emerging and developed markets, Foster SDME and innovation ecosystems among others.

Talamus Health, shelve off competition from two finalists, Ologa of Mozambique and Dropque Limited of Nigeria to scoop the award, aimed at recognising the most promising innovative solutions with social impact in vertical sectors, whether as an SME or within a larger company.

Over 200 applicants were shortlisted to 161, down to 16 for the “most scalable solution” accolade and after rigorous pitching and selection by a jury made up of industry professionals and serial investors and entrepreneurs three applicants including Talamus Health, Ghana, Ologa, Mozambique and Dropque Limited, Nigeria emerged as the finalists—with Talamus Health recognized as the winner.

The award comes after Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful lucidly sold the government of Ghana’s digitization agenda to potential investors who participated in the just ended 2018 Telecom World Conference and Exhibition, calling on them to assist the West African country and other nations to showcase innovations taking place in their countries.

ITU, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said can assist by creating a more congenial environment and platform so that Ghana and other nations can exhibit their innovations.

The Ablekuma West MP noted such support will give an opportunity to interested companies to compete with the rest of the world on current innovations trend and attract investors accordingly.

Again, speaking at a session under the conference dubbed ‘Ghana Day’ to showcase the Ghana in terms of innovation and culture Mrs Owusu-Ekuful who’s bent on luring foreign direct investments into Ghana to boost government’s digitization agenda told participants at the ‘Ghana Day’ session made up investors that, the government of Ghana (GoG through the Communication Ministry is “determined to use the purchasing power of the state to assist startups…tech entrepreneurs to get a heads-up.”

“And we know that once they do, just as the President of South Africa [Cyril Ramaphosa] told us in the opening ceremony if we focus on young women or women, the youth and SMEs [small scale enterprises] we have an excellent chance of making the digital revolution work. And, so just like President Ramaphosa, we are keen on developing the Science Technology Education and Mathematics (STEM) for women,” she stated.
