A non-governmental organisation, JKAiD Hope Foundation, has stepped in to fully cover the cost of surgery and aftercare treatment for 3-month-old Baby Bertha, who is battling a rare birth defect known as Encephalocele.
The intervention follows a report by GHOne TV’s Awisi Dede, highlighting the baby’s condition and appealing for financial support. Baby Bertha is currently on admission at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where doctors have recommended urgent surgery.
Encephalocele is a serious condition that occurs during early pregnancy, where part of a baby’s brain or its covering develops outside the skull due to an opening that does not properly close. Medical experts say early surgical intervention is critical to improve survival and reduce complications.
The cost of the procedure, however, was beyond what the family could afford, prompting the public appeal.
Responding to the call, the JKAiD Hope Foundation has committed to paying the full cost of the surgery and all post-operative care, giving the child a renewed chance at life.
Executive Director of the foundation, Leslie Emegbuonye, said the decision was driven by the organisation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children.
“At JKAiD Hope Foundation, we believe no child should lose their life because of lack of money. When we heard Baby Bertha’s story, we knew we had to act immediately,” he said.
For the family, the support has brought immense relief after weeks of uncertainty.
Baby Bertha’s mother expressed her gratitude:
“I didn’t know where the help would come from. We were scared. But today, I am grateful. God bless everyone who supported my child.”
With funding now secured, doctors are expected to proceed with the surgery, offering hope for Baby Bertha’s recovery and a healthier future
