Avoid these mistakes and your next kiss may be your best.

Don’t become a human faucetDon’t go over-the-topDon’t drift off

We’ve all experienced a bad kiss. Whether the person’s breath smelled like red onions or they used way too much tongue, it’s an experience you’re unlikely to forget.

So how do you prevent yourself from becoming someone else’s bad kiss story? Here are a few tips on what to avoid when going in for your next kiss.

Don’t lead with your tongue

A kiss can be magical, but the one thing that is bound to break the magic is the feeling of a squishy, wet tongue being the first thing hitting your lips.

Always lead with your lips at the start of a kiss. Once you get a rhythm, you can incorporate your tongue, but definitely hold off until the time is right.

Don’t become a human faucet

While everyone produces a different amount of saliva, you can control the amount that ends up on your kissing partner’s face.

Try not to push too much saliva out of your mouth while kissing and be careful with how wide the motions of your mouth are. If you’re getting their chin wet, you’ve probably gone too far. No one should need a towel for their face after a make-out session.

Don’t go over-the-top

Keep it tame at first. We all get caught up in the heat of the moment, so if you’re both on the same page with getting aggressive at the get go, far be it from me to cool you down.

But if you’re starting every kiss like a lion going in for the kill without being aware of what your partner wants, you’re likely doing it wrong. It’s best to start slower and build up to a passionate kiss.

You can always increase the heat later as long as you’re both comfortable.

Don’t drift off

If you’re bored, you’re not doing it right. whereas many women concentrate on the act of kissing itself, according to a study in the journal of Evolutionary Psychology. No matter how you see a kiss, if you’re thinking about what’s coming next or what you’re going to make for dinner that night, you’re not going to perform your best.

Don’t go through the motions. If you care about the person, kissing can be an important way to connect with them physically.

 Don’t sneak a peak;keep your eyes closed

You know when you can feel someone staring at you even if you can’t see them? That’s what it will feel like to your partner if you don’t shut your eyes while you kiss them. Keeping your eyes closed will free you up from distractions and deepen your kiss. Don’t worry, the TV will still be there when you’re done.

Don’t only focus on the lips.

A peck is always nice, but if you’re only kissing on the lips, you’re doing it wrong. The book “The Science of Kissing” showed that women love to be kissed on the neck, but even if you’re kissing another gender, it doesn’t hurt to switch it up. Kiss their neck, ears, cheek, shoulder — you name it. This shows that you have range and will keep them guessing, so don’t limit yourself.

Don’t chomp down on their lips.

Think twice before using your teeth.

Biting your own lip when flirting can be hot. Biting someone else’s lip when kissing can really go either way.

Unless they initiate it first or say they like it, be very cautious about biting someone’s lip when you kiss — especially in the heat of the moment. Not everyone is going to be into it and if they’re not, it can be painful.

If you’re going to do it, even with their blessing, be gentle and don’t chomp down on their lips.

Don’t forget to breathe.

If you’re ready to pass out, you have a problem. Your partner may take your breath away, but you should still be able to breathe during your kiss. If you’re having trouble breathing, it may mean the two of you are smooshing your noses together or in an uncomfortable position. If you make yourselves comfortable and still can’t breathe, just take a quick break every few moments and take a breath. Your partner will still be there when you’re done.
