The Management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has donated 560 brand-new computer laptops to 74 selected Senior High Schools across the country.
The move forms part of the Technology University’s corporate social responsibility towards promoting teaching and learning of Internet Communication Technology (ICT) education in less-endowed Senior High Schools.
KNUST for some years now has adopted special admission arrangement for SHS graduates from less-endowed schools to offer them the opportunity to study priority courses in the Science and Technology University.
Speaking to Ultimate News during presentation of the computers to the beneficiary schools at a short ceremony in Kumasi, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, and Vice-Chancellor of KNUST urged students in the less-endowed schools to study hard to meet KNUST special admission target.
“Our University is science and Technology University, if our students SHS are not well trained in technological development that is unfolding in our world, then they will be a bit handicapped when they come to our university. So we thought it best to at least empower them with technological skills at their level before getting to the university, so at least they will not be shocked at the changes we will provide when they come to our first years class room,’’ he said.
Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso reiterated the unversity’s commitment towards providing admission to students on the list of the Ghana Education Service’s less endowed schools across the country who meet the basic pass mark into the university to access some of the university’s top-notch programmes which would otherwise not have been available to them.
“So now our way of support to student in the less endowed schools is to support their ICT education and give them admission including scholarships if the meet the basic pass grade”.
Teachers of the beneficiary schools who received the laptop computers on behalf of their schools commended KNUST for the gesture done them and urged other corporate institutions to follow suit.
