The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has applauded the Ghana American Football Federation (GAFF) and the National Football League (NFL) for their continuous investment in grassroots sports development in Ghana.
His remarks followed the successful staging of the 4th Annual NFL FLAG Championship over the weekend at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, an event that brought together young athletes from schools across the country to compete in various divisions.
The championship featured thrilling contests in the Under-12 Co-Ed and Under-14 Boys and Girls categories. Nima 1 Basic School emerged champions in both the U-12 Co-Ed and U-14 Girls divisions, while St. Kizito Basic School claimed victory in the U-14 Boys category.
Since its introduction in 2022, the NFL FLAG initiative has expanded rapidly, now reaching over 30 schools nationwide. The program aims to introduce flag football to Ghanaian youth, promote teamwork and discipline, and create sustainable pathways for athletic and personal growth.
Hon. Adams praised the NFL delegation and the GAFF executives for their inclusive approach to sports development, particularly their teacher training component, which equips educators with the skills to sustain flag football programs in their schools.
“We appreciate what you are doing and want you to do more. Please know the Ministry is ready to support your efforts,” – Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams acknowledged.
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting emerging sports through policies that encourage innovation, partnerships, and community engagement.
Ghana remains the first African country to host a structured NFL FLAG program, a milestone supported by NFL players Brian Asamoah and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, as well as the Philadelphia Eagles, who continue to champion grassroots American football development across the country.
The growing collaboration between the Ministry, the NFL, and the GAFF signals a bright future for flag football in Ghana – one that blends global expertise with local talent to nurture the next generation of athletes.
