In a major legal victory for electoral integrity, the Kumasi Magistrate Court has annulled over 1,000 fraudulent voter transfers to the Manhyia South Constituency, a development that could significantly impact the 2024 elections.
The Court, presided over by Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkor, delivered the ruling on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, directing the Electoral Commission (EC) to return the voters in question to their original constituencies.
The case was brought forward by Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Manhyia South, after he discovered irregularities in the voter transfer process.
Baffour Awuah, who recently won the NPP parliamentary primary, quickly mobilized polling station executives and local residents to challenge the transfers.
Using Regulation 23 of CI 91, the objections revealed that the transferred voters were not residents of the constituency, raising questions about the integrity of the process.
The court’s decision to nullify the transfers is a major setback for the NDC, as the voided voters are believed to be sympathizers of the party.
This ruling underscores the critical role vigilance plays in safeguarding the electoral process.
Residents of Manhyia South, alongside NPP leaders, have hailed the decision as a victory for democracy and a reminder of the power of collective action in protecting the integrity of Ghana’s elections.
